Nuon's 128-bit processor does an acceptable job with the handful of titles released so far: Tempest 3000, the Next Tetris, the Mario Kart-like Merlin Racing, the puzzle game Ballistic and a bizarre shooting game called Freefall 3050 A.D. They're played with Nintendo 64-like controllers that, on the Toshiba, plug rather precariously into small ports behind a door on the front of the unit. I found the Toshiba remote control's joystick difficult to use, but the performance of the player itself was comparable to another mid-price Toshiba player I own. Still, those who haven't yet bought a DVD player can't go wrong buying a Nuon-enhanced player, which costs little more than standard players (the Toshiba has been selling for $299). It's the quality of the DVD transfer and the film itself that gives a disc value. As many DVD owners have learned, the excitement of special features wears off very quickly. But do they warrant trading in your DVD player? No. Overall, the Nuon features are fun and a lot more dynamic than standard bonus material. Hyper slides: Production art shown alongside moving scenes from the film - an improvement over static image galleries. Zooming in on the crowd at a basketball game reveals some spectators to be cardboard cutouts. Gamma zooms: A selection of still frames to zoom in on, including Hurley's cleavage and Fraser's fake tattoos. It's much better than watching the whole film again waiting for them to say something interesting. Viddies: Montages from the film, including a Hurley fashion show scenes in which Hurley's devil character transforms and, best of all, digests of the commentaries, which compact Hurley and producer Trevor Albert's best comments into 12 minutes, and director Harold Ramis' into 23 minutes. Nuon players, however, gain access to the following: On its own, it's a well-produced DVD that should satisfy fans of the film. The "Bedazzled" DVD includes a host of special features, including commentaries and a documentary, that don't require Nuon.
